Members of the Industrial Workers of the World in Ireland took part in the annual Bloody Sunday March for Justice commemoration in Derry. The event marked the 53rd anniversary of the murder of 14 unarmed civil rights protesters by brutal British Parachute Regiment in 1972. The majority of those shot down in the streets that day were members of the local trade union movement.
As thousands gathered to trace the streets of the original Civil Rights march, members of the IWW Ireland Branch marked the occasion to help highlight the plight of 6 bakery workers in Xixón, who are facing imprisonment for their trade union activity in the Spanish State. Syndicalists gathered under one of the most iconic murals to those murdered on Bloody Sunday in the heart of the Bogside, Derry.
“We are here today to extend our solidarity with our fellow workers in the CNT at this time. We are here to help highlight their case and to remind those within the Spanish State they cannot target and criminalise trade unionists for standing up for workers rights in the workplace or on the streets. Syndicalism is NOT a Crime!”
