Litera Meat is one of the largest meat processing plants in Spain and possibly in Western Europe. It is located in the town of Binefar, in the Northern province of Huesca, and it is one of the main centres of economic activity in the region. The sprawling complex employs a workforce 1800 strong.

The success of the strike has been huge! Up to 85% of the workforce have refused to work and up to 400 people have joined the predawn pickets. So much so that the huge plant has had to stop functioning altogether, something that company directives have referred to in local media as “having to rearrange production”. This has costed the company up to 1M euros a day.
The company have employed all sorts of tricks to make the strike a failure, but to no avail. In the days leading to the stoppages it spread rumours and disinformation, and it employed terror tactics and repression against the workers. During the strike it has resorted to bus in scabs and refused access to the site to the strike committee (even when escorted by the police), who wanted to ascertain that this was the case. Obviously, the company was trying to hide the presence of scabs! It is worth saying that both actions go against the law, and they have only had the effect of making the company liable to prosecution at a later date.
There have been moments of tension with police and company representatives when the buses with the scabs arrived on site. The aggressive attitude of the officers and the bosses did not help to calm things down! However, our comrades stood their ground and the huge numbers and support they got from other CNT local branches (who sent reinforcements in) meant police could not attack picket lines.
Meanwhile, the business unions do not support the strike. They entered into sham negotiations with the company that have led to no improvement in real conditions for the workers.
